Greetings everyone,

I have found that to start one's own religion is first and foremost a lot of work. If you are intending on doing it you must possess patience and must be in it for the long haul. Of course while fun religions are just that fun, for anything to be taken seriously you have to spend a lot of time researching and building your knowledge up. After all, if you are starting a new religion, there are no established schools to go and learn all you need to know in order to preach and teach properly. Having a connection with God/dess is very important too...because without that connection you are relying solely on human knowledge and human abilities to get things going.

I have also found that in order to start a new religion you will be talking A LOT. And you will be talking to a lot of different people. Not all may accept your new views. So diplomacy and public speaking is a must.

I am no where near ready to take my faith completely public yet and it has already been over two years, and even more years of research. So keep this in mind as you plan to create a religion from scratch. When I get further along I will post more here to help out anyone else who is trying to do the same.

I agree it takes years. I mean, look at Joseph Smith. He started his church when he was 14 years old. He dies when he was 33, and his church didn't take off until AFTER he died! It was his followers that actually got the church up and running, and that was nearly 20 years after Smith first started it. Of course today 200 years later the Mormon church has millions of members world wide.

Same with Jesus. He only preached for 3 short years, and Christianity didn't take hold until a full 300 years after his death!

So that's something to think about too. The top religions - the really big ones that last for centuries, usually did not yet exist while the founder was actually alive! The founder spent years trying to get people to follow him, but he had to die before people would listen!

Well, with that in mind, you can expect it to be pretty hard to start a new religion, but you can also expect that once started, it'll grow for hundreds of years after you have died.
